The word is probably derived from "janavasa" which in Sanskrit means an assembly or place fit for all people to live. Probably the word was later used in Tamil Nadu as the place where the bridegroom and his people were accommodated on the eve of marriage. Jana i.asam is now used in the sense of the procession in which the groom is taken through the streets on the eve of the wedding. |
